New World Symphony (NWS) will join forces with The Cleveland Orchestra on November 17 and 18, 2023, at the Adrienne Arsht Center for a side-by-side performance of Richard Strauss’ Eine Alpensinfonie (An Alpine Symphony), led by NWS Artistic Director Stéphane Denève, and featuring over 120 musicians together on stage for this epic work. Tickets are available through the Adrienne Arsht Center.

The program also includes Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto, performed by The Cleveland Orchestra and featuring cellist Pablo Ferrández, whom The Los Angeles Times describes as having “Pop-idol magnetism, superb technique and exhilarating musicality…”

On November 19, 2023, members of The Cleveland Orchestra will join NWS Fellows for a thrilling afternoon of chamber music at New World Center’s Michael Tilson Thomas Performance Hall. Led by NWS Conducting Fellow Molly Turner, the program features Dai Fujikura’s otherworldly quintet for winds, Cosmic Breath (a co-commission by NWS); Shostakovich’s joyful String Quartet No. 9, which he dedicated to his wife; Robert Schumann’s lush fugues, Six Studies in Canonic Form; and Pulitzer Prize-winning Ned Rorem’s Eleven Studies for Eleven Players, which will showcase 11 virtuoso soloists.

This is the second year of the side-by-side partnership between NWS and The Cleveland Orchestra. Named one of the Top Ten Performances of 2022 by South Florida Classical Review, the inaugural side-by-side performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 was led by NWS co-founder and artistic director laureate Michael Tilson Thomas.

The collaborative relationship between New World Symphony and The Cleveland Orchestra stems from the many TCO musicians who annually serve on New World Symphony’s visiting faculty roster, mentoring Fellows on and off the stage. In 2010, the orchestras joined forces for a benefit concert at Miami Beach’s Lincoln Theatre to raise money for medical care in earthquake-stricken Haiti. This ongoing collaboration aspires to create a meaningful and substantial impact for the Miami community and the larger orchestral field.

The NWS Fellowship Experience

The New World Symphony is a global leader in orchestral and artistic training. Talented musicians, aged typically between 22-30, are awarded three-year fellowships that consist of a robust curriculum of musical, entrepreneurial and community engagement training. Each season, Fellows are mentored by over 250 visiting faculty members and guest artists, and design and execute their own entrepreneurial projects. Fellows in various stages of their three-year fellowship make up the orchestra each season. NWS has over 1,250 alumni transforming communities in over 30 countries.

Eighty-seven Fellows comprise the 2023-24 class at New World Symphony across 17 instruments and three non-instrumental positions. The Fellows are selected for this highly competitive opportunity based on their musical achievement and promise, as well as their passion for the future of classical music. The 37 new Fellows selected to join the 2023-24 class represent 13 U.S. states and eight countries around the world.
