The celebrated Colonial Consort returns to two repeat concerts (12/9/23 & 12/10/23) of Cuban and other Latin American colonial art composers, using historically informed interpretation and instrumentation. The repertoire of the concert will feature the sacred vernacular and secular feast compositions of Havana-born criollo Esteban Salas y Castro (1725-1805) and other colonial composers including Juan Gutierrez de Padilla (1590-1664) and Ignacio de Jerusalem (1707-69), both European exports who worked in colonial Mexico. We will also feature other anonymous colonial compositions from cathedrals in Bolivia and Peru. Religious and paraliturgical compositions were part of the feasts that took place during the holidays in cathedrals throughout Latin America, deserving mention in the canon of at times obscure Latin American colonial repertoire. Providing these performance opportunities will bring about better cultural awareness to the greater Miami population. Translations of the Spanish text will be offered by the director and included in the program as an insert.
