OPERA THEATRE ENSEMBLE PRESENTS DIE FLEDERMAUS WITH A CHARMING ROARING 20’S FLAIR

The New World School of the Arts Opera Theatre and Opera Orchestra present Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus, a delightful operetta full of humor, intrigue, and sparkling melodies under the direction of NWSA music alumna and voice/opera faculty member Dr. Megan Barrera, and Dr. Grant Gilman, Orchestra Conductor. Set in the glamorous world of the 1920s, this production combines exquisite vocal performances with a stylish Roaring 20s twist, complete with lavish costumes and lively dance. Audiences will be swept away by the laughter, champagne-fueled antics, and timeless charm of this operatic masterpiece.

This production of Die Fledermaus offers students a multifaceted experience that challenges them to grow as complete artists, not just as singers. In addition to mastering the operetta’s intricate vocal and musical demands, students are immersed in developing their acting skills through the delivery of spoken dialogue, which is crucial for their stagecraft. “Acting on stage requires more than beautiful singing—it involves reacting authentically, embodying characters fully, and engaging with fellow performers in the moment,” explained Dr. Barrera. “Comedy, in particular, is a challenging art form, and this production allows students to explore comedic timing, physicality, and connection with the audience. By working on both the musical and dramatic aspects of the operetta, students gain the tools to become dynamic, well-rounded performers prepared for the demands of a professional stage.”

The production of Die Fledermaus supports the student classroom experience by providing a hands-on opportunity to apply vocal, theatrical, and instrumental techniques learned in the classroom. Students collaborate across disciplines, from opera theatre to the orchestra, refining their skills in performance, ensemble work, and musical interpretation. This immersive experience enhances their understanding of operatic staging, character development, and historical performance practice, fostering professional growth and artistic excellence.

New World School of the Arts’ specialized opera/voice concentration is unique and rare among Bachelor of Music degree programs in the nation. The curriculum offers undergraduate music students the opportunity to perform mainstage leading roles in fully staged opera productions and opera scenes, accompanied by stellar piano collaborators and the music division’s opera orchestra. The conservatory style education at NWSA supports high level one-on-one instruction with experienced artist faculty members who cover bel-canto technique, lyric diction, acting, and so much more, for the enhancement of students’ vocal artistry and training to become successful classically trained singer/actors.
