'The Crossings: A Global Movement Experience' Exhibition

The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery invites the public to the opening reception of “The Crossings: A Global Movement Experience” on September 12, 6-9 PM.
Conceived by the visionary choreographer Damaris Ferrer, this project unfolds as a dynamic narrative that transcends traditional dance and performance, redefining the essence of communal storytelling through movement. “The Crossings” employs a monumental skirt—over 20 feet long with eight waistbands—as a conduit for shared experiences and collective movement.
During the pandemic, Ferrer reimagined her vision, creating an open-ended “movement score” that invites unscripted, intentional journeys. The inaugural crossing in November 2020 at Long Key Nature Center in Davie, Florida, sparked global crossings, each reflecting unique cultural contexts. Central to the exhibition is the skirt, a living artifact of this collective journey, transforming the space into a living map with multimedia elements. “The Crossings” celebrates global interconnectedness, challenging conventional art boundaries, amplifying unheard voices, and inspiring collective artistic action.
The exhibition is on view until November 3, 2024.
