Atlanta native Tyler Mitchell, born in 1995, gained international acclaim when he photographed Beyoncé for Vogue's September 2018 cover, becoming the first Black artist to do so. This summer, the High Museum will host a major exhibition showcasing his unique blend of fine art and fashion photography, along with a new photo-sculptural piece. Mitchell's work emphasizes Black self-determination and empowerment, often depicting people enjoying leisure, play, and recreation.
This homecoming exhibition will feature over thirty photographs, exploring themes like masculinity, motherhood, domesticity, rest, and nature. His expressive and theatrically playful works delve into style, beauty, and identity, while also touching on deep themes of family and connection. Through these images, Mitchell captures not just moments, but the essence of relationships, weaving a narrative of love, intimacy, and shared experiences.
