For more than a century, the potential kinship between quilts and abstract painting has ignited lively debate. While the vibrant geometric patchwork of quilts visually parallels the celebrated examples of abstract painting, many argue that such comparisons overlook the unique context of quilt production. Black women's quilts, in particular, have often been excluded from these discussions and underrepresented in art museum collections.
Since the 1980s, the High Museum of Art has actively collected exemplary Black quilts. Over the past six years, the museum has significantly expanded its holdings, ensuring that Black quilts maintain a prominent, rotating presence in its galleries. This collection-based exhibition is the first to showcase many of these recent acquisitions, addressing the compelling question: “How can quilts made by Black women reshape the narrative of abstract art history?”
