Wed 08/14/2024Los Angeles-based La Santa Cecilia is a vibrant Latin rock group that blends diverse global influences, drawing from Colombian and Mexican cumbia, bossa nova, rhumba, bolero, and tango, and mixing them with rock, soul, R&B, ska, jazz, and even klezmer. The band, formed by children of immigrants, gained acclaim with their 2013 debut album, Treinta Días, which offered an energetic yet deeply personal look at Latino life. Their hit single "Ice el Hielo" became an anthem for the 14 million undocumented residents in the U.S., leading to a Grammy win for Best Latin Rock Album. In 2017, La Santa Cecilia released Amar y Vivir, an audio-visual album of covers recorded live in various locations around Mexico City. Their 2019 self-titled mini-album paid tribute to three band members' fathers who had recently passed away, featuring a cover of Bessie Smith's blues classic "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out." In 2021, they released Quiero Verte Feliz, with the title track featuring singer/songwriter Lila Downs.
